Mittal to increase capacity at Vanderbijlpark

South African steel producer, Mittal Steel South Africa, says its R578-million relining of the Vanderbijlpark Blast Furnace D to increase capacity at the plant is scheduled to start in February 2007. This forms part of the company’s R8-billion capital expenditure programme to increase its production of liquid steel.

Commodities bounce buoys JSE

The JSE was in positive territory in noon trade on Thursday buoyed by a bounce in commodity prices. Dealers said that the bourse would have been even stronger were it not for the firmer rand. By 11.52am, the all share index added 0,86%. Resources rallied 1,45%, the gold mining index jumped 1,68% and the platinum mining index picked up 0,98%.

Baghdad bombs kill 10 as violence surges

At least 10 people were killed and 25 wounded in a series of car bombings in Baghdad on Thursday, the third day in a surge in insurgent violence in the Iraqi capital. Three bombs in quick succession killed at least six people and wounded 15 in a wholesale vegetable market in the violent southern district of Dora, police said.

Aussie Allenby takes Bob Hope lead

Australian Robert Allenby fired a nine-under 63 here on Wednesday to seize a two-shot first round lead in the -million, five round Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Allenby, who began on the back nine at La Quinta Country Club, carded a 32 on his first nine holes that included a pair of putts of more than 20 feet.

It’s the out-of-alpha-into-beta form of the Venice Project. Still bemused? The Venice Project was a cool codename for an online television system, and in reality came from a hotel conference room: not one Cornetto required. Now it’s called <a href="http://www.joost.com" target="_blank" class="standardtext">Joost</a> which, if it’s Dutch, should start with a Y sound and rhyme with host, or toast.

Colombian militia leader confesses to massacres

A senior commander of Colombia’s right-wing militias has admitted taking part in some of the country’s most grisly crimes in the first of what could become a flood of confessions from demobilised paramilitary leaders. Salvatore Mancuso told a prosecutor in Medellín this week that he was responsible for hundreds of kidnappings, murders and massacres.

Nigerian militants release hostages

Militants in Nigeria released five Chinese hostages and one of three Italian oil-workers seized in separate attacks in the country’s oil-rich southern delta region, officials and militants said on Thursday. Nigerian militants have frequently taken foreign workers hostage since launching a wave of attacks on the country’s oil industry since early 2006.
