A return to the village

After several years of tortuous talks Ugandan rebel negotiators have returned to their jungle base to consult their mystic leader days before they are due to sign a peace deal that will put an end to one of Africa’s longest conflicts. The Lord’s Resistance Army rebels and government negotiators signed a flurry of accords recently and are expected to conclude a final peace deal at UN-backed talks in Southern Sudan early in March.

Many more than 6 900 jobs

The possible loss of 6 900 jobs at Gold Fields mining company will affect more than 50 000 additional South Africans, deepening the economic impact beyond the numerical cuts alone. According to research by the mineworkers’ union, NUM, each miner supports an average of between six to 10 dependants.

Wait till Jacob Zuma hears this. France’s new first lady, Carla Bruni, is into polygamy. “Monogamy bores me terribly,” she told the French newspaper, Le Figaro, a few months before meeting and rapidly marrying President Nicolas Sarkozy. “I prefer polygamy and polyandry [the female equivalent].”

Hoax email case falls apart

The state’s hoax email trial of axed spy boss Billy Masetlha and two others came to the brink of collapse this week when it was revealed that no evidence exists to implicate any of the accused with creating the emails. Masetlha, IT expert and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) agent Muzi Kunene and the agency’s former IT manager Funi Madlala are accused of defrauding the NIA.
