Daniel Day-Lewis scoops best actor Bafta

Daniel Day-Lewis gave his Oscar chances a welcome boost on Sunday by landing a best actor Bafta at the British Academy Film Awards for his searing portrayal of a driven oil prospector in There Will be Blood. French actress Marion Cotillard sprung the surprise of the night by scooping the best actress award for her role as singer Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose.

Flags, not veils as Cairo celebrates

Girls wearing the Egyptian flag instead of the veil danced among tens of thousands in the streets of Cairo on Sunday night after their national team won a record-breaking sixth Africa Cup of Nations. Crowds of people wearing the national flag colours of red, black and white erupted with screams of joy as the final whistle blew, some lighting handheld fireworks.

Zidan revels in right decision

In 2006, Mohamed Zidan chose club over country and missed out on Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations win in Cairo. Fast forward two years to Accra on Sunday and the Hamburg striker was right in the thick of the Pharoahs’ successful title defence. Zidan set up Mohamed Aboutraika for the decisive 77th-minute goal in the 1-0 victory over Cameroon.

Yahoo! set to rebuff Microsoft bid as too low

Yahoo! is set to reject Microsoft’s unsolicited bid, now worth -billion, as too low, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Saturday — the first clear signal the board might be prepared to negotiate and sell the internet media giant. The Wall Street Journal had quoted an unnamed source as saying Microsoft’s offer of per share was an attempt to ”steal” the company.

Jaws actor Roy Scheider dead at 75

Actor Roy Scheider, a two-time Oscar nominee best known for his roles as a small-town police chief in Jaws and his portrait of famed choreographer Bob Fosse in All That Jazz, died on February 10 at age 75. Scheider died of complications from multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood cells.

Bush orders clampdown on flights to US

The United States administration is pressing the 27 governments of the European Union to sign up for a range of new security measures for transatlantic travel, including allowing armed guards on all flights from Europe to America by US airlines. The demand to put armed air marshals on to the flights is part of a travel clampdown by the Bush administration.
