New talent shares the spotlight with international masters in Durban this week.
? Freshly unveiled is Fresh Starts 2011, an exhibition of the work by students from the Durban University of Technology’s fine art and jewellery design department. An important aspect of the curriculum is to link students’ creativity with business savvy. The paintings, prints and jewellery on exhibition were created during a two-week module run by lecturers Jan Jordaan and Themba Shibase (fine art) and Samantha Vincent (jewellery design).

? Recently opened is Recollect: A Turquoise Journey, a solo exhibition by KwaZulu-Natal artist Hendrik Stroebel whose intricate ceramic and embroidery work has been acclaimed around the world. The show is the culmination of a 15-year peregrination spanning the Near East, the Levant and central Asia. Turquoise, a shimmering blue-green mineral, derives its name from the French turques — it was first brought to Europe through Turkey from the mines of Persia. Stroebel’s exhibition, a romantic tale from antiquity to modernity, consists of large- and small-scale works that combine ceramics, carved wood, bronze and embroidery. His work has a painterly quality and abounds with the patterns and textures of the Islamic world.
