Cape music pick: March 4 2011

The web may be a twitter about Die Antwoord re-animating the stage where they kick started their ‘Zef’ rap revolution.

But with the added exception of indie dance darlings Zebra and Giraffe, the line-up at SA’s only ‘Real Alternative Music Festival” is uncompromisingly underground. Friday night draw cards include progressive African rock visionaries Blk Jks, Afrobeaten elektro-disco conceptualists Gazelle and indie kwela-pop eccentrics Desmond & The Tutus. Saturday’s highlights are even more alternative with indie shoegazers Isochronous, carny folk blues combo Mr Cat & The Jackal, Sowetan rock pin-up Ree-Burth and conscious rapper Tumi sharing the stage with America’s Alkaline Trio and the UK’s Funeral for a Friend. Alternative (read ‘metal’) stage highlights are more murky, but if you’re after a heaving mosh-pit, then look no further than Juggernaught. And if you’re wondering about the rock-centric bent, relax. The electronic stage boasts a ‘who’s who’ of Mother City mash-up hipsters including Haezer, Fletcher, Niskerone, Sedge Warbler, Toby2Shoes and more. Not forgetting a ‘beach party’ featuring dubstep femme fatale Funafuji and live bass-sample savant Mr. Sakitumi. Emcee? ‘Danger zone’ comic John Vlismas, naturally. Camping, hot showers, braai facilities and ample parking available.

Nekkies Holiday Resort, Worcester, March 4 to 6. Entrance is R450 (pre-sold) or R500 (gate) for weekend pass; R100 (gate only) for Sunday.
