Cape cinema pick: January 13 2012

Cinema Vietnam is hosting a series of open-air community film screenings in Mooiwater, the heart of the township of Franschhoek North. The majority of the inhabitants of Mooiwater used to live in an informal settlement called Vietnam, which inspired the name of the event.

The festival is aimed at locals but the organisers hope to attract audiences from all parts of the Franschhoek Valley and tourists looking for something interesting to do on a hot summer night. The films will be complemented by live local music, and local food and produce, including crafts, will be on sale. The programme this weekend includes Fire in Babylon (documentary, United Kingdom, 2010), Shaka Zulu (the 1986 epic TV series), Black Girl (director Ousmane Sembène, 1966), Pumzi (director Wanuri Kahiu, 2010), and Bob Marley & The Wailers: Carribean Nights (documentary, 1986).

On the R45 (on your left as you drive towards Franschhoek from the N1), 3km from the town centre, until January 14. Free entry. Doors open at 7pm and screenings start at 8pm. Tel: 076 8310 434.
