According to the saying, the world is headed to the gutter when society takes comedians
seriously and thinks politicians are a joke.
- Putting this aphorism to the test this week is the
acclaimed Joburg Comedy Cartel which is in Durban for three shows to tickle the coastal
funnybone with their dry highveld wit. Comprised of gifted humourists Alyn Adams, Vittorio
Leonardi, Shaun Wewege and Warren Robertson, the JCC don’t aim to be taken too seriously
but guarantee their jokes are funnier than those of politicians. And they very seldom wallow in
the gutter to get their laughs, which is more than you can say for the average vote-hound. These
are four funnymen who avoid the tired clichés and stereotypes that make up so much of what
passes for South African comedy.
