Durban art pick: April 29 2011

Born in Karima, Sudan, and a 1994 graduate of the Sudan University in Khartoum, the artist
fled his home country as it became increasingly engulfed in violent internal conflict.

A series of temporary residencies in Germany, Wales, Norway and Egypy followed before he settled in South Africa. In 2007 he completed his MA in Fine Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, where he lives with his wife and two children. In Hussein’s unique painterly environment of evocative, post-abstractionist narratives, he reconstructs fragmented memories of a boyhood in a harsh desert landscape and those of the equally harsh glacial climes and glacial people of Northern Europe. The major new solo exhibition of his work is aptly entitled Echoes.
