The sentencing of Prince Sifiso Zulu for the deaths of two people in a car crash he caused was postponed on Monday as the Durban Regional Court did not receive pre-sentencing reports.
Magistrate Thomas Nhleko adjourned the matter to August 26.
Zulu’s lawyer, Lonwabo Dandala, who was standing in for Thabani Masuku, told the court the clerk had failed to do her job properly by not handing in a request for the report.
Prosecutor Mark Dyson told the court the delays were unacceptable.
“This has been dragging — The victims attending court want this case to be finalised. At some stage delays cannot be tolerated. The state wants this finalised.”
Zulu jumped a red traffic light in a BMW X5 and collided with a Mitsubishi double-cab, killing two members of the Soul’s Harbour Ministries Church and injuring 10 others in March 2008.
He was found guilty in April on seven charges, including culpable homicide, reckless driving, failing to stop at an accident and failing to help the injured.
Family members of the victims in court on Monday were upset about the delay.
Zachariah Mncube, a relative of one of the girls killed, said they wasted money coming to court.
“We came all the way from Ulundi thinking that this man [Zulu] would be sentenced today. The postponement was done purposely,” Mncube said.
He was accompanied by Nonhlanhla Mncube, the mother of Sidumisile Mncube, one of the girls killed in the crash. — Sapa
