Cape theatre pick: September 23 2011

Mrs Gaddafi, the First (ex) Lady of Libya, makes her first appearance on stage in Pieter-Dirk Uys’s latest satirical revue, Desperate First Ladies.

She thanks President Jacob Zuma (for letting her and her children into South Africa) and the people of Cape Town (for allowing the camels to graze at Kirstenbosch). In Uys’s chorus line this time, joining President Zuma’s current three First Ladies are Angela Merkel, Evita Bezuidenhout, Winnie Mandela, Grace Mugabe, Mother Theresa, Bambi Kellermann, Helen Suzman and Mrs Pietersen, who has worked very hard on the Cape Flats during the last Municipal Elections to find votes for the DA. She argues that it cannot be called a Whites Only party. ‘Look at the posters on the poles,’ she says. ‘Zille, de Lille en hulle? Helen’s botox is making her look coloured; Patricia’s hairspray is making her off-white, and Lindiwe Mazibuko looks like the Queen of Sheba!’

Until October 1 in the main theatre stage at the Baxter Theatre Centre, Rondebosch. Book at Computicket. Tel: 021 685 7880.
