GRANT Muller took a one shot lead as South Africans dominated the opening round of the Vodacom Tour’s Cock of the North tournament at the Ndola Golf Club on Thursday. Muller produced a steady round of 70 (three-under par) in testing conditions. Muller, who is playing as a fulltime professional this year after trying to combine the game with his career in the insurance business, is one shot clear of tour rookie Naithen Moore and 21-year-old Steve Basson while Stephen Wilson and Zimbabwe’s Nasho Kamungeremu a further shot behind on 72. Most of the field struggled to come to terms with the Ndola layout which was in an unforgiving mood and playing exceptionally long after overnight rain. Any player missing a fairway or green needed a brilliant recovery shot – and some luck – to escape with par. Scores soared well into the 80s and players within 10 shots of Muller can still realistically make the cut with a solid round.
