THE Dukuduku forest station will be opened near St Lucia in northern Kwazulu-Natal on Thursday to facilitate the relocation of forest dwellers settled illegally in the ecologically-sensitive region. In an attempt to preserve the forest, the government bought two farms on which to resettle the forest dwellers. The move met with resistance from a minority of the forest’s inhabitants earlier this year which led to clashes with the police and members of the Nature Conservation Service. The office of Water Affairs and Forestry Minister Ronnie Kasrils said in a statement on Wednesday: “We will pursue all the peaceful means to solving the problems but let no one underestimate our resolve to deal with (the) matter.”
