PRECARIOUS calm returned to Algeria on Monday after a weekend of further rioting by enraged members of the nation’s Berber ethnic minority that brought the estimated death toll to about 80. Young Berbers went on the rampage in the northeastern Kabylie region after a teenager was shot dead in a police cell on April 18. The riots provoked a heavy crackdown by riot police. The two main towns in the region, Tizi Ouzou and Bejaia, scenes of serious clashes, were reported quiet on Monday ahead of a scheduled national television address by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Schools and most shops remained closed as residents cleared up. Bejaia looked like a town hit by war, with particular damage to public buildings – seen locally as symbols of Algerian state power in the region. – AFP
