THE Canadian House of Commons unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday granting honorary citizenship to former South African president Nelson Mandela. The resolution was passed just days after a member of the right-wing opposition Canadian Alliance, Rob Anders, used a procedural tactic to block the house from giving Mandela the honour. It was jointly moved by the leaderships of all of Canada’s five parliamentary parties, including the Canadian Alliance. The honorary citizenship will be presented to Mandela when he is visits Canada, scheduled for later in the year. Mandela is the only living foreigner ever to receive honorary Canadian citizenship. – AFP
