THREE DIE AS BURNING SHIP SINKS OFF EGYPT

AT least three people died when a Ukrainian ship carrying Sri Lankans seeking work in Europe caught fire and sank near the entrance to the Suez Canal, Egyptian port authorities said on Wednesday. Nine people were also reported missing among the 83 who were aboard the Galak which caught fire while loading provisions at the southern entrance to the Port of Suez overnight Tuesday, they added. The passengers and crew jumped into the water. Rescue services were able to save 71 people, including six who were taken to hospitals. The bodies of three passengers were pulled from the water and nine people were still missing. Most of the passengers were Sri Lankans trying to immigrate illegally to Europe, Sri Lankan survivors told reporters in a hospital in Suez. – AFP
