The Zurich Ballet presents its signature piece, The Goldberg Variations, on May 1 and 2. This dance show comes highly recommended, so get your tickets now. OnBroadway, Somerset Road, Green Point. The La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre presents Fusin Flamenco. Carolina Rosa heads up a team of 10 female and two male dancers, accompanied by flamenco guitarist Bienyameen. International guest artist Juan Vega el Maera from Seville accompanies soloist Lexi Fernandes. The show runs until May 5, except on Sundays and Tuesdays, which see a new Mince drag show on stage, and Mondays, which are PieterDirk Uys evenings. Book at Computicket or Tel: 418 8338.
On the Side, Artscape Theatre Centre, Foreshore. Insignificant Others is a onewoman play running from May 9 to June 2. Cape Town’s longestrunning show, Theatresports, continues to draw the crowds every Tuesday and Thursday at 8.30pm. Just try to stump these expert improvisers. Bookings: Tel: 083 440 3961.
Opera House, Artscape Theatre Centre, Foreshore. The Cape Town Opera Season kicks off in May with the folk opera Porgy and Bess. The Bolshoi Ballet will be here from July 19 to 21 only, so book now at Computicket or Tel: 421 7695.
Sanlam Studio Theatre, Baxter Theatre Centre, Main Road, Rondebosch. Showing until May 5 is a great double bill, Sic and Naai. Sic, written and performed by Nick Boraine, tells the story of an actor whose speciality is dying on cue until he finds out he has a terminal disease. Naai is the story of Matie and her friend Elna, her sewing machine. Gretha Brazelle plays the tracksuited and stilettoheeled Martie. Theatre on the Bay, 1 Link Street, Camps Bay. The Night They Invented Champagne closes on April 28. The show has been poorly attended, although those who have seen it have enjoyed it. In the Cabaret Caf Alan Committie presents The Clown Jewels, a tribute to famous physical actors, on Sundays until May 6. Committie, with the help of Shirley Kirchman, presents some of the most popular comic characters of all time, from The Little Tramp to Austin Powers and Basil Fawlty.
