MONDAY, 11.00AM:
MARIUS CORBETT scored another world championship qualifying mark in the javelin event at the Southern Region Athletics championships in Durban on Sunday, with a personal best of 83,56m.
Corbett has secured a place on the plane to Athens for the world championships in August, but things are not as certain for Hestrie Storbeck, South Africa’s only hope for the high-jump.
Storbeck jumped 1,93m to take gold in the championships, but the Athens qualifying height is 1,94m. Storbeck has not lost hope, however.
Meanwhile shot putter Burger Lambrechts heaved a 7,26kg weight 19,05m, well over the Athens qualifying distance. Silver medallist Janus Roberts broke the national under-19 record with his throw of 18,42m with the same weight.
In the hurdles, Llewellyn Herbert also qualified for Athens with a 49,27s time in the 400m event. Herbert said he plans to improve his time to 48s in the Lille Grand Prix in France next Sunday.
