NIGERIA’S just retired military ruler, Abdulsalami Abubakar, may have put his feet up, but his wife, Fati, is going back to work. Abubaker on Saturday became only the second Nigerian commander in chief to voluntarily hand over power to an elected civilian, Olusegun Obasanjo. Justice Fati Abubakar will soon resume her interrupted career as a high court judge in their home state, she said at the weekend. She was the first Nigerian first lady to have been a career woman before beginning the round of attendances and openings demanded of the wife of the head of state. Obasanjo had in 1979 been the first Nigerian general to step down for elected civilians. He came out of his own retirement to stand in a February poll organised by Abubakar after he took over on the sudden death of dictator General Sani Abacha in June 1998.
