THE South African Police Union in the Western Cape handed 93 spent cartridges to the Independent Complaints Directorate in Cape Town on Thursday, symbolising one for every member killed in South Africa so far this year. Sapu’s national negotiator Andy Miller says union members originally planned to hand their firearms to the ICD, to express their disgust at the arrest of its members by the ICD. Miller was referring to the arrest of Hout Bay policeman Andre Ferreira by the ICD after he allegedly shot dead a robber involved in a cash-van heist of more than R1-million.
