WITH all the South African singles Wimbledon players eliminated, hopes are high that the doubles players will fare better. In second-round matches on Monday, Chris Haggard and American partner Bill Behrens won against Pablo Albano of Argentina and Slava Dosedel of Czechoslavakia, 7-6, 6-7, 7-4. Piet Norval and Neil Broad (UK) beat Cristian Brandi and Filippo Messori of Italy, 7-6, 6-1.
Meanwhile, in the first round, Brent Haygarth and his American partner Greg van Emburg beat Olivier Delaitre and Guillaume Raous of France, 7-6, 6-2. Christo van Rensburg and his Venezuelan partner Nicolas Pereira lost their first-round match against Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde of Australia.
In the women’s doubles first round, Rosalyn Nidefer and US partner Kathy Rinaldi Stunkel lost after a first set struggle, 7-5, 6-3, to the powerhouse partnership of Monica Seles and Anke Huber.

BOWLS WASHOUT RAIN stopped play early on the first day at the Anchor Life Bowls Classic at Circle Club in Durban on Monday. Players had just begun the first set of the second round when a downpour drenched the greens.
SA SPIRIT REWARDED SOUTH AFRICA came 13th in the second World Dragon Boat championships in Hong Kong last weekend, and were awarded the “Spirit of Qu Yuan” award for their team spirit and determination.
GRAINGER MOVES UP GAUTENG squash player Natalie Grainger, who recently qualified for the top 16 draw at the Al Ahram squash championships in Cairo, has moved up in the world rankings, from 20th to 17th position.
ERNIE GOES DOWN SOUTH AFRICA’S Ernie Els has been toppled by Greg Norman after being on top of the world golf rankings for one week. Norman won the St Jude Classic at the weekend, taking him to world number one spot.
FREE AGENT KAIZER CHIEFS are after the signature of lethal striker Mark Williams. The South African international is a free agent and is looking at offers from overseas clubs, but has not ruled out the possibility of rejoining the Amakhosi camp. He will meet Chiefs managing director Kaizer Motaung next week.
EUROPE WANTS ARENDSE BAFANA BAFANA number one goalkeeper Andre Arendse has received three offers from top overseas soccer clubs. The names of the clubs have not been released but two are said to be from Britain and one from Holland.
