The multiparty coalition that rules Cape Town — led by the official opposition Democratic Alliance — is to hold a march through the Mother City’s streets on Thursday to protest against attempts by the provincial-ruling African National Congress (ANC) to reconfigure the city governance system.
Mayor Helen Zille is scheduled to hold a media conference at her civic offices later on Monday to provide further details about the March.
At this stage, however, the march is scheduled to start at noon on Thursday in Keizersgracht in District Six and will then move to the offices of the provincial minister of local government, Richard Dyantyi.
Posters have already been put on poles in the city calling for the defence of democracy and for members of the public to join the march. The Freedom Front Plus, the African Christian Democratic Party and the Democratic Alliance have posters up in the vicinity of Parliament.
The African National Congress (ANC) provincial minister is seeking to change the system from the current system of an executive mayor to a proportional system of governance, which would effectively allow the ANC and Independent Democrats a stake in governance.
