Anton Goosen robbery suspect ‘nabs himself’

A man who may be connected to the recent robbery of popular Afrikaans musician Anton Goosen virtually landed himself behind bars on Friday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Inspector Katlego Mogale said this happened after police conducted anti-crime searches in Diepsloot, north-west of Johannesburg, at about 1pm. Various items were seized in the operation.

When the suspect, who lives in Diepsloot, came home, his wife told him about the raids and that the police had been into their house. Upset about the intrusion, he went to the police station to complain.

Mogale said the duty officer noted his identity number and discovered it corresponded with fingerprints found at Goosen’s home after the robbery.

He was arrested and will appear in a Pretoria court soon on housebreaking charges.

Mogale said the searches were conducted with the necessary authorising documentation.

Goosen was robbed of R584 000-worth of personal belongings by four armed men at his house in Hennops River Valley near Hartbeespoort Dam on Thursday.

The men made off with Goosen’s pistol, a DVD player, a TV set, a laptop computer, CDs and an undisclosed amount of money.

The robbers surprised him while he was sleeping and hit him on the head with a firearm. — Sapa
