A bomb exploded at the Umtamvuna bridge near the Wild Coast Sun casino and hotel complex on the border between the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, police representative Director Bala
Naidoo said.
He said the explosion was heard by members of the local community shortly after 1am.
Naidoo said: ”The bridge is intact, but two pylons supporting the bridge were damaged. Forensic experts are busy gathering information on the scene.
Engineers will be called to see what damage has been caused.”
He said the bridge was closed to traffic. Naidoo could not confirm any link to the recent bomb blasts in Gauteng and Cape Town.
”Our investigations are at a very premature stage, so we can’t speculate at this stage. All will be done to ensure that we get enough evidence to arrest the perpetrators and we ask the public to assist police with any information,” he said.
He also denied media reports that bomb experts from Pretoria were on their way to the scene to diffuse two live bombs.
”We are at the scene and there are no other live bombs.”
