Panesar stars as England beat Windies

England beat the West Indies by 60 runs to win the third Test at Old Trafford on Monday and go an unbeatable 2-0 up in the four-match series.

West Indies, set what would have been a record fourth-innings victory total of 455 to win, were bowled out for 394.

Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar took 6-137 for a match haul of 10-187 in total.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was 116 not out as England, after being whitewashed in the Ashes in Australia, won their first Test series since defeating Pakistan 3-0 at home last year.

Victory for England saw captain Michael Vaughan become his country’s most successful Test skipper with 21 victories.

At lunch, the West Indies were 379-7 — 76 shy of victory.

But in the second over after the break, England fast bowler Stephen Harmison took two wickets in four balls to reduce the tourists to 385-9.

Panesar ended the match when he had last man Corey Collymore caught at short leg off bat and pad.

The West Indies started the day on 301-5, 154 short of their target, with Chanderpaul 81 not out.

England’s second innings 313 featured opener Alastair Cook’s sixth hundred in 17 Tests but they would have posted an even tougher total had not West Indies debutant Darren Sammy, a pace-bowling all-rounder, taken 7-66.
