Thousands throng for Danish royal wedding

Tens of thousands of Danes were pouring into Copenhagen’s downtown area from midday on Friday to watch the horse-drawn wedding procession of Crown Prince Frederik and Tasmanian-born commoner Mary Donaldson.

Though not particularly warm, but without the feared rain, police in the Danish capital reckoned with well more than 100 000 spectators through a sea of Danish and Australian flags.

Each of Europe’s monarchies were represented at the ceremony in Copenhagen’s Cathedral, which included 800 official wedding guests.

The ceremony was due to start at 4pm local time.

Special attention was lavished on the Spanish successor to the throne Felipe and his fiancée Letizia Ortiz, who step before the altar themselves next Saturday in Madrid.

According to the Danish Palace 100 seats in the cathedral were occupied by Australian relatives and friends of the bride.

The pair forbade all TV cameras from the altar for the actual wedding ceremony, as Frederik and Donaldson wanted those moments kept ”entirely private” for themselves.

However, they had no objections to the installation of a TV camera in the carriage that will travel through the streets of Copenhagen after the wedding. — Sapa-DPA
