Australia-New Zealand clash in Brisbane sold out

Australia’s second Bledisloe Cup match against New Zealand in Brisbane later this month sold out on Monday, with officials hoping for a record crowd at Lang Park.

The last 1 500 tickets for the July 29 Tri-Nations clash were snapped up less than an hour after they went on sale on Monday morning.

Lang Park has an official capacity of 52 500, meaning if all ticket holders turn up, the crowd could just exceed the existing stadium record for a Test match of 52 492 set in 2004 when Australia played England.

The Wallabies have not lost at the stadium since the All Blacks inflicted a 32-25 defeat in July 1996.

Their record at the venue includes a number of remarkable victories, including a 76-0 thrashing of England in 1998 and last Saturday’s 49-0 humiliation of South Africa, the largest winning margin in Tri-Nations history.

Wallabies captain George Gregan said after Saturday’s match that the venue was his team’s favourite venue in Australia.

Australia must beat New Zealand to have any chance of regaining the Bledisloe Cup after the All Blacks triumphed 32-12 in the first game of the three-match series in Christchurch earlier this month. – AFP
