Dozens caught mid-stream in Jo’burg

Johannesburg’s metro police arrested 61 men for urinating in public in the inner city over the weekend.

The offenders were apprehended mainly around hawkers’ stands at St Mary’s cathedral in the city, Joubert Park, Hillbrow and Jeppe station during a metro police operation in the area, spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Monday.

Most paid a R300 fine, and those unable to pay appeared in court on a charge of urinating in a public area, a contravention of city by-laws.

The operation was to promote hygiene and keep the city clean, and formed part of an effort to deal with smaller offences in a bid to help bring down levels of more serious crime, Minnaar said. — Sapa
