As the festive season approaches, Jo’burg cops are aiming to double the number of drunken-driving arrests as compared with last year.
Ten motorists were arrested for speeding in the early hours of Saturday morning on the N1 South, Johannesburg metro police said on Sunday.
Another foreigner has been killed in South Africa as a wave of xenophobic violence spreads across Johannesburg, bringing the weekend death toll to 13, police said on Monday. The violence against foreigners, who are accused by many South Africans of depriving locals of jobs and committing crime, has spread across townships since the beginning of last week.
As a fresh wave of severe xenophobic violence gripped Johannesburg on Sunday, with five people killed in the Cleveland area, hundreds fleeing to the safety of police stations and shops in the CBD looted, President Thabo Mbeki announced that a panel had been set up to look into the attacks.
Calm returned to Alexandra township on Wednesday night after earlier clashes between police and residents. Hardly any activity was visible late in the night, besides the flashing blue lights of police patrol vehicles. The stand-off between the police and residents arose in the aftermath of xenophobic attacks in the township this week.
The police have been accused of harassing street traders and charging them exorbitant fines. In a street-traders’ survey released on Wednesday, most of the traders interviewed — 94% — said they had been harassed by police. At least 82% of street traders said they had had their goods confiscated by the police and had difficulty in recovering them.
Operation Juggernaut netted 39 road offenders with outstanding traffic fines and 27 illegal immigrants, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Sunday. Spokesperson Superintendent Vusi Mabanga said the arrests were carried out between 7am and 11am on Sunday.
Heavy rains, cold weather and strong winds will continue in Gauteng for the rest of the week, the South African Weather Services (SAWS) said on Sunday. This was due to a cold front passing through the area, said SAWS forecaster Evert Sholtz. He said rain and heavy winds would continue on Sunday and Monday would see strong winds blowing throughout Gauteng.
Johannesburg road speed cameras will be up and running this week, the Johannesburg metro police department said on Monday. ”There was a growing concern for human life as motorists began using roads as racing tracks when the cameras were not working,” said Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Outrage mounted on Tuesday over an attack on a young woman at the Noord Street taxi rank in Johannesburg for wearing a miniskirt. Nwabisa Ngcukana (25) was humiliated when taxi drivers and hawkers at the rank tore off her clothes and said she was being taught a lesson for wearing a miniskirt.

Johannesburg motorists had been using roads as a ”speeding track” since traffic law enforcement authorities in parts of Gauteng were barred from using speed cameras on some of the busiest roads in the city. One man died and another was left critically injured when three trucks collided on the N1 highway before the Golden Highway offramp on Tuesday afternoon, Johannesburg metro police said. Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said two combination trucks and an eight-tonne truck were involved in the accident.
Emails suggesting that a severe storm with a tornado was to hit Johannesburg and surrounds on Monday afternoon were "greatly exaggerated", the South African Weather Service said. One email on Monday read: "Please be careful as a tornado dropped in Randfontein on Saturday and is expected today."
The Johannesburg metro police department has disputed a claim by the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) that metro police have joined striking council workers in the city in large numbers. Samwu had issued a statement earlier on Monday claiming 3 000 metro police officers had joined the strike.
At least 10 000 municipal workers are expected to converge at Johannesburg’s Beyers Naude Square on Monday to begin a three-day strike. Police say there may be traffic backlogs and disruptions and have urged motorists to avoid the vicinity near the square.

Eyewitnesses have claimed that the engine of a two-seater Tiger Moth failed before it crashed into a truck, bus and car on a road in Ennerdale on Wednesday. A passenger in the plane died in the crash, which also killed the driver of the Iveco bus and injured 23 of the 40 security guards on board.
A reduction of crime since 2006 was the result of a clamp-down conducted by the Johannesburg metro police and the South African Police Service, metro police said on Wednesday. Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said more than 1 000 illegal firearms had been confiscated and armed robbery in the inner-city had been reduced by 63%.
