Fires rage in the Western Cape

Firefighters were on Monday busy combating mountain fires that started last week in the Cape winelands.

Conservation manager Patrick Shone said the affected areas were Wemmershoek and the Groot Drakenstein mountain.

Almost 11 800ha of fynbos has been destroyed in Wemmershoek and 7 100ha on the Groot Drakenstein.

”We are still busy trying to control the fires,” said Shone.

Meanwhile, 200 firefighters were battling to extinguish fires in the Boland, Working on Fire spokesperson Val Charlton said.

About 20 000ha of vegetation had been destroyed in Donkerskloof since the fires started.

”There has been a mist in the morning that will help cool things a little, but that also meant helicopters couldn’t fly. We hope to have the fire under control later today,” said Charlton. – Sapa
