Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after 11 people died in a head-on collision just outside Wellington in the Western Cape on Saturday, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Police spokesperson Donwin Agenbach said one of the tyres of a bakkie carrying 10 people burst before it swerved in front of an oncoming vehicle.
The bakkie was carrying 10 passengers and only three people, including a three-year-old girl, survived.
Seven of the passengers were on their way to a family member’s funeral.
The four passengers in the other vehicle, including a nine-year-old boy, also died on the scene.
The survivors were being treated at the Paarl Hospital. — Sapa
