Powell won’t be extradited from Britain

Former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) security chief Philip Powell will not be extradited from Britain to face charges relating to gun-running in South Africa, SABC radio news reports.

This was according to the National Prosecuting Authority, following a suggestion that the former IFP strongman be questioned about two weapons caches found at Ulundi two weeks ago.

Powell left the country to study in Britain soon after pointing out a large arms cache to police in northern KwaZulu-Natal five years ago.

The Scorpions believed Powell did not make a full disclosure, but said in terms of an agreement he cannot be extradited. – Sapa
