A HUGE crowd of opposition supporters, rallying in Belgrade this week to force President Slobodan Milosevic to step down, has stormed the federal parliament building and set it on fire. The crowd, numbering hundreds of thousands, also took over a police station and set fire to the headquarters of Serbian state television, loyal to Milosevic. The protesters pushed into the parliament building when riot police protecting it fled after firing dozens of rounds of tear gas. The rally was the climax of a mass civil disobedience campaign called by opposition leader Vojislav Kostunica to try to force Milosevic to concede defeat in the September 24 presidential election and stand down. – Reuters
