Agassi and Serena on fire

Past and present American champions made a rip-roaring start to the French Open on Monday. Serena Williams got the defence of her women’s title off to a perfect start with a 6-2, 6-1 mauling of Barbara Rittner of Germany, while Andre Agassi showed with his 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 win over Karol Beck of Slovakia that, even at 33, he is well capable of adding another success to the one he achieved here four years ago.

Agassi inadvertently smashes Graf with racket

Steffi Graf required three stitches after husband Andre Agassi inadvertently hit her in the face with his racket during a fundraiser that followed the final of the United States Clay Court Championships on Sunday. Graf and Agassi were holding hands — her left to his right — while rallying with a couple of youngsters when Agassi’s follow-through struck his wife in the face.

Agassi sent into retirement

Andre Agassi’s glittering career came to a tearful conclusion when he lost in four sets to German qualifier Benjamin Becker in the US Open third round on Sunday. Becker, the world number 112 who is playing just his second grand slam event, sent the 36-year-old Agassi into retirement with a 7-5 6-7 6-4 7-5 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Agassi in agony as rain halts US Open

Andre Agassi received another anti-inflammatory injection on Saturday and got an extra day to rest before playing in the third round of the United States Open, his match postponed because of intermittent rain. Matches involving Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova also were pushed back to Sunday.

I first took notice of Andre Agassi during the 1988 French Open, a tournament I particularly remember as it coincided with my last meaningful attempt to get fit. I’d installed an exercise bicycle in front of the telly so I could watch tennis while I pedalled my way to nowhere.

Agassi edges Baghdatis in five-set thriller

American veteran Andre Agassi kept his US Open campaign alive and staved off retirement with a stunning 6-4 6-4 3-6 5-7 7-5 victory over a stubborn Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus to reach the third round on Thursday. Agassi extended his run by closing out an extraordinary fifth set against a cramping Baghdatis with a service break to finish the three-hour 48-minute contest.
