TUESDAY, 5.00PM:
SABOTAGE by officials in the Department of Arts and Culture is hampering the functioning of the Pan South African Language Board, board chair Professor Nxalati Golele told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday.
The board was set up a year ago to promote the development of South African languages. But none of the board members – many of them senior academics – has received any remuneration. A chief executive officer was only appointed three months ago, and no other staff has yet been hired. Golele said the board’s submissions are ignored by the department, which still has not finalised guidelines for new appointments. “Perhaps it is a deliberate ploy to bog down the board and have some members resigning,” she said.
