Weekend league soccer matches

MONDAY, 11.00AM:

KAIZER CHIEFS scoredd a 5-1 victory over Michau Warriors at Johannesburg Stadium on Sunday, despite losing their captain Neil Tovey to injury. Chiefs played aggressively from the start, and demolished Warriors’ defence. Four of the five goals came from Mark Williams, in top form with hopes to rejoin the Bafana Bafana side, for the match against Holland next month.

Tovey was injured when Warriors defender Monier Saffodien tripped him up from behind. Saffodien got a yellow card, and Tovey was taken off on a stretcher.

League leaders Manning Rangers kept ahead with their 1-0 victory over Real Rovers in Pietersburg on Sunday. Referee Trevor Christian doled out seven yellow cards during the match, which was tense all the way through. Rovers put up a good defence for a goalless first half, but in the 75th minute substitute David Modise got past goalkeeper Merijane Mbangi.

Bloemfontein Celtic and Hellenic drew 1-1 on Sunday, at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein. On Saturday, Wits University beat Witbank Aces 1-0 in the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg.
