ANDY WARHOL once advised that you should always carry two drinks with you at cocktail parties. That way, if you run into someone icky, you can excuse yourself by saying you have to take a drink to your friend. The snack affair after the Edgars Club/Boss Models Fashion Model of the Year Award last Friday night saw this advice come in extremely handy. It’s not that there weren’t some fabulous celebrity guests present – Vinolia Mashego, Boom Shaka’s Lebo and Theo, kwaito star Arthur and the like – it’s just that the predominantly white guests wouldn’t have recognised a black star if one had beaten them about the head with an Edgars card.
Of course, the black cause wasn’t helped much by an announcement that performers Twins represent “the authentic sound of the township”. The tracks to which they proceeded to lip-synch were played so softly that all one could do was stare straight ahead at the bad hairdo in front of you.
The models themselves were, almost without fail, simply dreadful. The blond Twin could’ve won the event hands down. For that matter, you know you’re doing something very wrong when each and every one of the under-rehearsed male dancers providing entertainment between rounds is better looking than any of the male models in competition.
