JCI halts retrenchments

WEDNESDAY, 11.30AM

The retrenchment of up to 4 000 workers at Johannesburg Consolidated Investments’s Randfontein Estates gold mine has been suspended pending the outcome of new negotiations between JCI and the National Union of Mineworkers, mine GM Gordon Miller said yesterday.

Miller added, however, that 500 skilled and managerial staff had already left the mine after accepting voluntary retrenchment packages.

The loss-making mine is undergoing a traumatic downsizing.
