Lions eat junior mincemeat

WEDNESDAY, 1.45PM:

THE British Lions made mincemeat of the Emerging Springboks on Tuesday, beating them 51-22 in Wellington. But Lions coach Ian McGeechan was still not impressed with his team.

He said there was a spell when they looked “bloody awful” and that they were showed up at times by the good rugby played by the Emerging Springboks. “We defended pretty poorly for a 25-minute spell and you can’t afford to do that when there is such good rugby being played by your opponents,” he said.

The ‘Boks were only one point behind at half-time, but Lions picked up in the second half and made good their win. Thanks were mainly due to the efforts of Tim Stimpson, who notched up half the points for his side.

EMERGING SPRINGBOKS: Tries by Paul Treu, Warren Brosnihan and Marius Goosen; conversions by MJ Smith and Percy Montgomery, penalty by Smith.

BRITISH LIONS: Tries by Nick Beal (3), Mike Catt, Graham Rowntree and Tim Stimpson; six conversions and three penalties by Stimpson.
