THURSDAY, 1.00PM:
SOUTH African Football Association CEO Danny Jordaan says Safa needs about R7-million before the World Cup finals in France next year. Some of the money will be used for transport and accommodation, but some will be ploughed back into development programmes. “The national team players of tomorrow come from these provinces and if we ignore them, we will be digging our own graves,” he said.
Jordaan revealed that a car manufacturer is prepared to donate millions of rands to soccer should South Africa qualify for the World Cup finals. He said details will be made known in due course. He added that there are six other companies that want to sponsor the South African squad to the World Cup and Safa is still talking to them.
Even though Fifa will give R4-million to all the teams participating in France, Jordaan said it was important for Safa to make its own provisions.
