ASA names its team for Athens

TUESDAY, 1.30PM:

DISCUS thrower Fritz Potgieter was on Monday added to the team to take part in the world championships in Athens between August 1 to 11. This comes after Potgieter’s recent world-class perfomances in Europe. Potgieter achieved a world-championships qualifying distance in 64.16m in England last Tuesday.

Athletics South Africa also included a 4×400 relay team consisting of Llewellyn Herbert (400m hurdles), Arnaud Malherbe, Liod Kgopong (both 400m) and Hendrik Mokganyetsi (800m), who all have qualified in their respective disciplines.

South African team: Hendrik Mokganyetsi (800m), Hendrik Ramaala (10 000m), Chris Britz (20km walk), Liod Kgopong (400m), Arnaud Malherbe (400m), Hezekiel Sepeng and Marius van Heerden (800m), Liewellyn Hebert ((400m hurdles), Riaan Botha and Okkert Brits (pole vault), Burger Lambrechts (shot put),Marius Corbett (Javelin), Fritz Potgieter (discus), Andri Jongh (200/400m),Collen de Reuck (10 000m), Elena Meyer (5 000/10 000m), Hestrie Storbeck (high jump) marathon: Xolile Yawa, Lawrence Peu, Abner Chipu, Adam Motlagale, Abel Mokibe, Grace de Oliveira, Rita Toto, Reserves: Martin Ndivheni, Nixon Nkodima.

ASA NAMES ULTRAMARATHON TEAM ATHLETICS South Africa on Monday named the team of ultra-distance runners, to compete in the world 100km championships in Holland on September 13. The men’s team consists of: Nick Bester, Shaun Meiklejohn, Livingston Jabanga and Russell Crawford. The women’s team includes: Charlotte Noble, Rene du Plessis, Helene Joubert and Berna Daly.

SA NETBALL TAKES SERIES SOUTH AFRICA’S netball team won the three-match Test series against England.The SA Proteas beat England 54-52 at the University of Port Elizabeth sports complex on Monday night to clinch the title.

7 GOLDS FOR YOUNG ATHLETES SOUTH AFRICA’s junior athletics team arrived back home from the Zimbabwean championships with seven gold medals this week. The medals came from Maranelle du Toit (shot put), Rene Kalmer (1 500m and 5 000m), Catherine Maapela (10 000m), Charlene Lawrence (long jump), Johann Venter (pole vault), Phillip Mokhoma (3 000m) and Janas Robberts.

BAD DAY FOR ZAMBIAN ZAMBIAN Colin Musonda lost to Scotland’s Martin Heath in the second round of the NEI Africa Rolls Royce Open Squash championships at the Wits centre on Monday night. Musonda earlier received a Johannesburg welcome when he was the victim of an armed robbery in his hotel. Eastern Province No1 Greg la Mude beat 16th seed Paul Atkinson 9-7, 10-9, 9-3. Gauteng’s Gavin Broadfoot lost to world No15, Alex Gough 4-9, 0-9.

SIERRA LEONE OUT OF NATIONS CUP SIERRA LEONE has pulled out of the two remaining qualifying matches in the African Cup of Nations. The secretary of sports in Sierra Leone, Umaru Deen-Sesay, said they pulled out because they did not have the $180 000 needed to host the matches in neighbouring Mali, where the Confederation of African Football had ordered the matches be played because of the security situation in Sierra Leone. “Under the circumstances we have no alternative but to quit,” said Deen-Sesay.

GORTANA FIFTH SOUTH AFRICA’S Marco Gortana finished fifth in the $125 000 Infiniti golf championships at Richmond hill, Ontario in Canada on Sunday.
