Westerns do without skipper for Border clash

WESTERN Province will play their Bankfin Currie Cup match against Border at Newlands on Sunday without their captain Dick Muir, because of injuries. Muir, who is expected to return next week for the game against Boland, will be replaced by Robbie Fleck.

BRITS WINS IN GERMANY SOUTH AFRICA’S Okkert Brits won the men’s pole vault event at the Hamburg Athletics meeting in Germany on Wednesday.

SA BOY SURPRISES SOUTH AFRICA’S under-14 star Dirk Stegmann won the Carl Gantoise Cup tennis event in Brussels, after beating Stephanie Bohli 2-6 6-4 6-3. South Africa also won the doubles with Stegmann and Andrew Anderson beating Bohli and Stephan Valent of Switzerland 7-6 7-6.

SQUASH CHAMPS CRAIG WAPNICK advanced to the semi-finals of the NEI Africa Rolls Royce Open squash championships at the Wits courts on Wednesday night. Wapnick will meet Alex Gough on Friday.

In the women’s quaterfinals, Carla Venter beat Annalize Naude, Claire Nitch beat Yolandi Cilliers and Natalie Grainger outplayed Viv Doeg.

U14s LOSE TO NEW ZEALAND SOUTH AFRICA’s rugby colts lost 46-20 to their New Zealand counterparts in the Four-Nations rugby champiopnships in North Sydney on Wednesday.
