Kaunda shooting probe begins

TUESDAY, 5.30PM

AS paramilitary police patrolled the Zambain capital Lusaka and provincial towns on Tuesday amid continuing nationwide protests at the weekend shooting of former president Kenneth Kaunda, the Zambian government appointed a commission to investigate the shooting incident.

Making the announcement, Vice-President Godfrey Miyanda again denied the government had ordered the shooting of Kaunda and Rodger Chongwe, leader of the Liberal Progressive Front, when riot police broke up an opposition rally in the central town of Kabwe. “The government has nothing to gain from reckless and wanton behaviour by the police, that is if indeed, they used live ammunition,” Miyanda said.

Meanwhile, 53 opposition supporters detained by police Saturday remain in custody.
