Currie Cup round-up

MONDAY, 1.30PM:

FREE State Cheetahs beat Gauteng Lions 53-24 in a point-scoring Currie Cup match at Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday. Cheetahs led 22-14 at half time.

After 14 minutes, Gauteng Lions led 14-3 after two tries by Chris Rosouw and Thinus Delport. But Free State took control of the game and Lions were unable to score again in the next 50 minutes.

Free State centres captain Helgard Muller and Brendon Venter were taken out because of injuries.

FREE STATE: Tries: Jan-Harm van Wyk (2), MJ Smith (2), Jannie de Beer, Helgard Muller, Braam Els and Charl van Rensburg. Conversions: De Beer (5). Penalties: De Beer.

LIONS: Tries by Thinus Delport (2), Chris Rossouw (2). Conversions: Johan Roux (2).

The Blue Bulls beat Natal 33-28 and ended Natal’s record-breaking run of 29 consecutive wins in the Bankfin Currie Cup. The Bulls led 20-6 at half time.

In the opening minute of the game Joos Joubert was stretchered off the filed after his right leg was broken as he drove past the Bulls defenders, dashing his chances of making the Springbok tour of Europe.

BLUE BULLS: Tries by Van der Walt, Bouwer, Laufs; three conversions and four penalties by Steyn.

NATAL: Tries by Van der Westhuizen 2, Payne; two conversions and three penalties by Lawless.

Mpumalanga Pumas won their final match of the season against Boland 37-17 at Wellington on Saturday. Pumas led 17-10 at interval to cause an upset.

Boland, who were strong contenders for the semi-final spot just two weeks ago, played for the first time without Nick Mallett as coach. His absence was evident as the Pumas registered their fourth win in 13 outings, to bump Boland down to seventh place on the log.

MPUMALANGA PUMAS: Tries were scored by Polla Nel, Riaan Potgieter, Piet Joubert (2).

BOLAND: Tries by Stefan Terblanche and Jannie Coetzee and Harold Karele. Pieter O’Neill goaled one.

Border narrowly beat neighbours Eastern Province 28-23 in their final Currie Cup match of the season in East London on Saturday.

Border withstood an early Eastern Province charge after fullback Dewald van Eyk scored a try and flyhalf Chris Beukes landed a penalty in the first 10 minutes. Border scrumhalf Richard Bennet scored two tries.

BORDER: Tries by eighthman Marcel van der Walt, fullback Richard Bennet (2), wing Dale Heidtmann. Conversions: Flyhalf Greg Miller. Penalties: Miller (2).
