Mallett denies interference in selections

FRIDAY, 1.00PM:

SPRINGBOK coach Nick Mallett has lashed out at overseas reports about Sarfu president Louis Luyt being involved in team selection for next month’s tour of Europe and the United Kingdom.

”It’s crazy, completely nonsense,” he said. ”No one can tell me or any of the Springbok selectors who we should pick or should not pick.” he said.

Mallett, however, did not deny the existence of a document that shortlisted some 50 names. Some players were mentioned more than once and for defferent positions. But the noticeable omission in the list was Gauteng utility back Hennie le Roux.

It was widely believed that Luyt was behind the omission of Le Roux. ”I not sure how the list got out. But I’m not greatly concerned. I will have to explain my selections soon enough and I’m happy to do that,” added Mallett.
