Chiefs share spoils with Rovers

MONDAY, 8.45AM:

KAIZER Chiefs and Real Rovers shared the spoils in a Castle Premier Soccer league match played in front of close to 40 000 spectators in Pietersburg on Sunday. Chiefs and Rovers drew 1-1.

Rovers lethal striker George “Ruber” Mathiba opened the score for the home side in the seventh minute after Rovers Sunday Kalunga capitalised on a defensive mistake by Chiefs defender Muisi Ajoa and crossed the ball for Mathiba, who did not hesitate to put the ball behind the net.

In the second half Chiefs came back strongly, but perfect goalkeeping by Patrik Ebong denied them goals. Ebong was called to make brilliant saves from Thabo Mooki, Neil Tovey and Thabang Lebese.

Subsitutes Isaac Kungoane and Mark Bachelor made all the difference in Chiefs attack. In the 75th minute Bachelor headed home Kungoane’s corner to equalise for the “Amakhosi”.

Mamelodi Sundowns registered a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in a Premiership game at Odi Stadium on Sunday. The goal that separated the two sides was scored by Nigerian Raphael Chukwu when he headed home Daniel Mudau’s cross in the second minute. Sundowns showed some fine touches by miedfielders August Makalakalane and Roger Feutumba, which unsettled the visitors.

Vaal Professionals beat African Wanderers 1-0 in a closely contested match at Iscor Stadium on Sunday. Substitute Jeffery Mbhele created the only goal that was scored by veteran striker Robson Seakamela in the 86th minute.

Wits University beat AmaZulu 3-2 at Milpark Stadium on Friday night. Marks Maponyane scored the first goal for the Students in the 25th minute. Sidwell Maboe replied for the “Usuthu”. Ashley Makhanya made it 2-1 for the home side before Stewart Murisa equalised for the vistors.

Ivan Winstanley scored the winning goal in the 54th minute.

Molefi Ntsoelengo scored a brace to register a first away win for Moroka Swallows when they beat defending Champions Manning Rangers 2-1 at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday.

Ntsoelengo scored his first goal when he capitalised on a defensive mistake by Gavin Radford in the 48th minute. In the 56th minute Ntsoelengo completed his brace when he fired a shot past goalkeeper Grant Johnson.

Rangers had earlier took a lead in the 24th minute through an error by Swallows goalkeeper Dumisani Mhlongo.

Hellenic collected maximum points against Cape Town Spurs as they beat Spurs 2-1 at Green Point Stadium on Friday.

Goalkeeping errors and poor defending contributed to Spurs down-fall, who took a lead as early as 23rd minute through striker Ian Gorowa. In the 28th minute Hellenic’s Craig Bianchi fired a powerful shot which was back headed by Spurs John Paskin into the net past an advancing goalkeepr Moneeb Josephs to level the score 1-1 at interval.

In the 72nd minute Josephs’ clearance from a Bradley August shot hit the back of the net to give Hellenic a deserved victory.

QwaQwa Stars and Supersport United played to a goalless draw at Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday.
