MONDAY, 12.30AM:
PAKISTAN seemed to have the third match and the series wrapped up at the start of play on Monday morning, chasing just 146 for victory. Just 167 minutes later it was all over, with Pakistan all out for 92 in 37 overs.
The man who broke Pakistan’s spirit was Shaun Pollock, who took four wickets in seven balls — to which he later added a fifth wicket to give him 5/37 in 11 overs.
But the man-of-the-match award went to teammate Pat Symcox, who scored 81 and 55 in his two innings, then took three wickets for eight runs.
Wicket keeper Dave Richardson equalled Johnny Waite’s South African record by taking his 141st wicket. But while Waite played 50 tests, Richardson is on number 39.
This is the second time South Africa have come back from near defeat in a test — they did the same in a test against Australia in Sydney. Monday’s victory gives them the Pakistan series 1-0, with the other two games drawn.
