MONDAY, 3.30PM:
ASLAM TOEFY, chief commander of People Against Gangsterism and Drugs, resigned at the weekend, Pagad executive member Cassiem Parker confirmed on Monday.
Parker declined to give reasons for Toefy’s resignation, which followed a Pagad demonstration in Sea Point on Saturday, but it is understood his resignation will be discussed at a meeting of the organisation soon. It is believed Toefy quit over disagreement about whether to co-operate with police. The Sea Point placard demonstration took place in the face of an official refusal to grant permission for a planned march by Pagad.
Parker said that Pagad will meanwhile continue with its plans. Pagad Boland co-ordinator Fahrie Patel said on Monday: “The organisation has proved it doesn’t matter who resigns. The programme will go forward. The organisation is bigger than the individual.”
Meanwhile, the Cape Flats gang war took a new turn at the weekend with the start of a turf war over control of shebeens in the area. Two people, one a 16-year-old boy, were shot dead and several injured. A 24-year-old man was killed and another injured when a group attacked a shebeen in Kleinvlei shortly before midnight on Saturday. A few minutes later the same gang opened fire on a patrol of the Kleinvlei neighbourhood watch, injuring one man. The 16-year-old boy, Norman Arries, was shot dead near another Kleinvlei shebeen on Sunday.
