THURSDAY, 6:30PM:
THE Free State branch of the Pan Africanist Congress caused a rumpus today with the blithe admission that renegade members of the party, mainly former guerrillas, have been responsible for the string of murderous attacks on farmers, because they have no jobs or food.
Agricultural union officials demanded to know why the PAC had not revealed this information before, and asked to know whether police were also aware of it. They also asked for negotiations with the PAC on the subject. Farmers have previously blamed ex-guerrillas for the military-style attacks on their farms, in which farmers are invariably killed, but relatively little is stolen.
Police say they have found no evidence linking former guerrillas to the farm murders.
