Cape bomb attack targets police task unit

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Cape Town | Thursday 11.00PM.

ONE woman has died and another is seriously injured after a bomb exploded at the Salus building in Belleville, near Cape Town on Thursday.

The building houses the police special task unit investigating violence associated with the vigilante group People Against Gangsterism and Drugs.

A Pagad member arrested after a bomb blast destroyed a bakkie — the occupants are believed to have blown themselves up by mistake — was being questioned in the building on Thursday morning.

Western Cape police commissioner Leon Wessels said the bomb used was similar to those used in other attacks by the vigilante group. Police believe the task unit was the target of the attack.

Initial investigations indicate the bomb was hidden under the table of a street vendor outside the building, who later died of her injuries. A second woman is in serious condition in hospital. Neither has yet been identified.

Western Cape safety and security MEC Mark Wiley said the attacks are nothing more than urban terrorism. He said that the attackers will be hunted down and brought to justice. Police were reported to be searching the houses of Pagad members late on Thursday night.
