Shocking crime stats come to light

CHRISTIAN FIGENSCHOU, Johannesburg | Thursday 4.00pm.

IT emerged in the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday that more than 1000 policemen have been murdered in South Africa since 1994. Meanwhile, the South African Agricultural Union published statistics that show there were more than 2000 attacks on farmers, in which more than 500 farmers were murdered over the same period.

Handing down a 65-year jail sentence to cop-killer Kobane Caiphus Makena (35), Judge Theo Grobbelaar said: “Police are sick and tired of being hunted like unprotected game.” Earlier the court heard police evidence that since 1994, 1015 policemen have been murdered. Last year, 88 police officers were murdered on duty, and another 149 off duty. In the first three months of this year, 27 officers were murdered on duty, and another 33 off duty.

Also on Wednesday, the SAAU revealed that since 1994, 553 farmers have been murdered in 2355 attacks.

Meanwhile, senior police officers and major private security companies met in Johannesburg on Wednesday in a summit called to discuss the 10 cash-in-transit heists that have been pulled off so far this week.
